Junior ACL Sunday 21 May 23

by Jason O’Brien, Piltown PRO

We travelled up to Callan on an overcast warm Sunday morning to take on the combined team from mid county.

A lot of this team had played a game on Friday evening and the heavy legs were noticeable as the Home side took the upper hand as they scored the first four points of the game through Hannah Keher and 3 from Megan Walsh.

It took 14minutes for the away side to score and it was from Leah Cooney, this was soon bettered as Ciara Dunne received a pass from fellow forward Heather Phelan, and Ciara buried it past Dominique Delaney in the JL/BB goal , to level the game.

The home side were direct with their passing and touch, and they were efficient with their scores as Megan Walsh added another two , and Aoibhe Ryan got one , and just before half time , Caoimhe Shiel stole in to score a goal. Piltown hadn’t scored since their goal in the 14th minute , and went in behind at the break 1-08 to 1-01.

That scoring drought continued into the second half but Megan Walsh continued scoring , with Vivienne Holmes also scoring in the 40th min, before Chloe Holden struck over the ball for a point , and that was soon added to by Heather Phelan in the 45th minute .

Piltown were on top now in this phase of the game , but unfortunately some wayward shooting was leaving the home sides lead intact. Aoife O’Shea did get a shot on target though, as she soloed down the right side and put it over the black spot. Leah Cooney got her second point in the 52nd minute, as Piltown kept battling , despite the heavy legs and there was no lack of effort at all.

Megan Ryan got a point from centre back and the other Megan, at centre forward, Walsh scored her ninth of the game to finish out the scoring.

A comfortable victory just looking at the scoreboard, but Piltown were on top for a lot of the second half, and it should have been a lot closer if not for some poor wides.
