Minor A Camogie County Final 2016

Conahy 2:3 Vs Dicksboro 0:6

by Gavin Nolan

The eagerly awaited Minor A County Final took place in the well turned out Castlecomer GAA grounds on Sunday 20th November.  Conahy and Dicksboro are familiar rivals, as they faced off in the U16A final in 2015. This was always going to be a very tight encounter between two very determined and organised teams.

When the game warmed up on this bitter cold morning it was the Boro girls who had the better start going 3 points ahead after a well taken score from midfielder Annie O Connor and two from play by county player Ciara Phelan. But the Conahy girls responded with two points from frees by corner forward Danielle Morrissey and a great solo and score from Megan Randle. It looked like the two teams would be going in all square but Caoimhe Dowling had other ideas with a well taken point on the sideline to put the Dicksboro woman up by a point at half time. Dicksboro 0:4 Vs 0:3 Conahy.

After the half time break both teams came out all guns blazing with hard tackling and work rate. The town woman got the first two points of the second half with Aisling Morrissey and Jane Cass getting on the scoreboard with well worked points. But this proved to be the Boro’s last score of the match. Conahy’s defence began to get on top and led by their outstanding centre back Roisin Phelan they had wave after wave of attack on the Boro goal. Danielle Morrissey broke through the Boro defence and was about to pull the drigger when she was dragged to the ground. Penalty. Up stepped Danielle to take the resulting penalty, it was stopped and cleared by the Boro defence. It seemed Conahy had missed their chance and the Dicksboro name would be on the cup for a third time in a row.

But credit to the Conahy girls they never gave up the fight. Danielle Morrissey won a hard ball on the wing and delivered a high ball which was caught by full forward Lorraine Kennedy and she in turn found sub Hannah Murphy who headed for goal and calmly hand passed the ball to the Boro net.

Game on match level 1:3 – 0:6. It didn’t take the Conahy girls long to hit the net again and a 45 struck by Danielle Morrissey ended up in the Boro net. With 10 minutes remaining the Dicksboro woman tried to break the through the Conahy defence. Lauren Phelan in goal cleared two balls which dropped short much to the delight of the Coanhy support. Conahy and Dicksboro fought hard for every ball and both teams never gave up. But when referee Liz Dempsey blew the whistle it was Conahy who were crowned champions for the very first time at Roinn A level.
