Young Ireland’s and Glenmore claim Junior and Intermediate titles, while Thomastown and Mullinavat secure senior showdown

Thomastown secured safe passage through to the senior county final for the fourth successive year when they defeated Dicksboro in Dunmore in the first senior championship semi final to be played under lights on a 2-09 to 1-08 score line.

It was Dicksboro who started the game brighter and opened the scoring through an Orla Hanrick free in the second minute. Thomastown responded through an Anna Farrell free in the sixth minute from twenty one meters after Shelly Farrell was fouled. Dicksboro responded with a further Orla Hanrick free in the eleventh minute from twenty one meters to make it 0-02 points to 0-01 for the Boro.  Kirsty Maher then pulled off a terrific save after Aoife Farrell rounded her marker and got a shot on goal. Thomastown were starting to get real momentum in the contest and reeled three points on the trot. Anna Farrell started the run with a forty five in the seventeenth minute. Sarah Walsh followed this up with a well taken point from forty five meters in the twenty first minute before Shelly Farrell tapped over a point in the twenty second minute to make it 0-04 points to 0-02.  Orla Hanrick stopped the rot for the Boro with a free from thirty meters in the twenty fourth minute. Eimear Farrell who was just introduced as a sub then tapped over a point in the twenty fifth minute but it so easily could of being a goal. Eimear Farrell was not to be denied and got in for a goal in the twenty fifth minute which was just the tonic her side needed before half time. She gained possession forty five meters from goal cut through the Dicksboro rearguard and coolly dispatched the sliotar home from fourteen meters to make it 1-05 to 0-03. Orla Hanrick closed out the first half scoring with a forty five just on the verge of half time to cut the deficit to four points at the break 1-05 to 0-04.

Thomastown began the new half brightly with a brace of points. Niamh Donnelly started the run with a point from twenty one meters in the opening minute.  Shelly Farrell then tapped over a point from twenty one meters to make it 1-07 to 0-04 after thirty four minutes.  Lisa Hanrick responded with a point for the Boro in the thirty ninth minute from forty meters.  Disaster struck for the Boro in the fortieth minute when she got in for Thomastown’s second goal, she latched onto a breaking ball on the twenty one meters line cut through to tap home.  Anna Farrell followed this up with a forty five to put her side into a 2-08 to 0-05 points lead. Orla Hanrick stopped the rot for Dicksboro with a free from forty five meters in the forty fourth minute. She followed this up with a free from twenty one meters in the forty fifth minute. Shelly Farrell then tapped over her third point of the evening in the forty seventh minute after latching onto a Sarah Walsh pass to make it 2-09 to 0-07. Great credit to Dicksboro they really set down there stall in trying to get back into the contest.  Orla Hanrick started the run with a well taken point from thirty meters in the fifty seventh minute. Kiristy Maher then brought the Boro back into the contest when she got a goal for Dicksboro in the sixty second from a free from twenty one meters to make it a four point game. Dicksboro had a chance to cut deficit further when they were awarded a penalty in the sixty fourth minute after Orla Hanrick was fouled but her effort was brilliantly saved and Thomastown cleared there lines. Shortly after this the referee blew the full time whistle to see Thomastown secure their passage through to the county final for the third season in succession on a 2-09 to 1-08 score line.

Mullinavat 4-14                 St. Lachtains/Lisdowney 1-03

Mullinavat secured safe passage through to the county final for the third year in succession when they easily accounted for  St. Lachtains/Lisdowney in Callan on Sunday on a 4-14 to 1-03 score line.

It was the victors who raced out of the trap and went into a 3-03 to no score lead. Michelle Quilty started the run with a goal in the second minute when she latched onto a breaking ball twenty meters from goal cut through to hand pass home from the edge of the small square. She followed this up with a point from a free from twenty one meters in the fourth minute.  Ciara Holden followed this up with a long range free from twenty one meters in the fifth minute to make it 1-02 to no score.  St Lachtains were almost in for a goal in the sixth minute with numerous players having efforts but no matter what was thrown at them Mullinavat held firm and cleared there lines after a extended period of pressure. Julieann Malone continued the good Vat run when she got in for her sides second goal after latching onto a brilliant directed Michelle Quilty hand pass that took two defenders out of the game, left Malone free inside to coolly hand pass home from the edge of the small square.  Ciara Holden then tapped over a long range pass from forty five meters in the eleventh minute after latching onto a misdirected St. Lachtains/Lisdowney clearance. Michelle Quilty then got in for her and Mullinavat’s second goal in the thirteenth minute when she latched onto a Aine Kinsella shot that dropped short  to coolly tap the sliotar over the on running keepers head to put her side 3-03 to no score clear. Aoife O’Carroll stopped the rot for St. Lachtains/Lisdowney in the seventeenth minute when she tapped over a well taken point from an awkward angle twenty one meters from goal.  The victors responded with a brace of points. Ciara Holden started the run with a trade mark long range score from fifty meters in the twenty first minute. Julieann Malone then followed this up with a point from twenty meters after latching onto a long Elaine Aylward clearance.  Great credit to St. Lachtains/Lisdowney the bounced back with 1-01 on the spin. Ann Dalton started the run when she gained possession forty meters from goal cut through the Mullinavat defence to coolly dispatch the sliotar home. Ellen Fitzpatrick followed this up with a well taken point from twenty one meters to make it 3-05 to 1-02 at the break.

Ann Dalton continued the St. Lachtains/Lisdowney fight back at the start of the second half with a well taken point from twenty one meters in the opening minute to make it 3-05 to 1-03. Unfortunately for her side that turned out to be there last score of the game as Mullinavat closed out the contest with 1-09 on the spin.  Julieann Malone started the run with a point from twenty one meters in the thirty fourth minute when she latched onto an Angela Kenneally pass from twenty one meters. Michelle Quilty followed this up with a well taken score from thirty five meters a minute later. She followed this up with a point from twenty one meters in the forty second minute after latching onto an Elaine Aylward pass to make it 3-08 to 1-03. Julieann Malone then tapped over a point in the forty second minute before Ciara Holden tapped over a long range free a minute later to make it 3-10 to 1-03. Michelle Quilty then tapped over a point from twenty one meters in the forty ninth minute before Jessica Dunphy tapped over a point in the fiftieth minute to make it 3-12 to 1-03. Julieann Malone put the game to bed in the fifty third minute when she got in a goal when she coolly dispatched the slotar home to make it 4-12 to 1-03. Mullinavat closed out the contest with two further points from Aine Kinsella in the fifty third minute and Angela Kennelly in the fifty ninth minute to see Mullinavat cruise into the final against Thomastown on Sunday next on a 4-14 to 1-0 score line.

History was made in Ballyhale on Sunday, not only was it the first final in the history of camogie in Kilkenny that had all female officials officiating but Glenmore secured senior status for the first time in twenty three years when they overcame a brave Rower Inistioge, who just came up short in the decider for the second year in succession.

It was the victors who began the game well and opened the scoring thorough a Helen Hoynes free from forty five meters. Rower Inistioge responded with a brace of points. Jo-Anna Galavan started the run with a point from twenty one meters in the eight minute. Aine Gannon then followed this up with an excellent long range score from fifty meters in the ninth minute. Rower Inistioge thought they were in for the games opening goal thirty seconds later when Catriona Ryan found herself in on goal but her shot from close range was brilliantly saved by Linda Long in the Glenmore goal. Helen Hoynes responded for Glenmore with a free in the fourteenth minute from forty five meters to equalise the tie at 0-2 points apiece. Kelly Hamilton responded with a brace of points to put Rower Inistioge into the lead again. She started the run with a point from forty five meters in the fifteenth minute; she followed this up with a well taken point from thirty five meters in the seventeenth minute after latching onto a misdirected Glenmore clearance. Helen Hoynes responded with an excellent long range free from fifty meters in the eighteenth minute. Rower Inistioge were awarded a penalty in the twenty first minute when Ciara Foskin was fouled. Kelly Hamilton stood up to the resulting penalty but her effort was saved and Glenmore cleared there lines.  Glenmore responded with 1-01 on the spin. Jacqui O’Connor started the run with the game’s only goal in the twenty third minute when she latched onto a breaking ball on the edge of the small square to tap home. Helen Hoynes followed this up with a free from twenty one meters in the twenty seventh minute to make it 1-04 to 0-04. The teams then traded scores before the interval with Kelly Hamilton tapping over an excellent point from forty five meters in the twenty eight minute before Helen Hoynes responded for Glenmore with the last score of the half with a point from thirty five meters in the thirty first minute to make it 1-05 to 0-05 points at the break.

Glenmore began the new half well and opened the scoring with a free from forty five meters in the thirty third minute. Ciara Foskin responded for Rower Inistioge with a point from play in the thirty fifth minute to make it 1-06 to 0-06 points. Rower Inistioge were almost in for a goal again in the thirty seventh minute when Jo-Anna Galavan found herself inside the Glenmore cover, but her hand pass effort on goal was brilliantly saved by Linda Long and  Glenmore cleared there lines. Glenmore responded with brace of scores through Claire Aylward from twenty one meters in the forty first minute and a further Helen Hoynes free in the forty fifth minute from twenty one meters after Jacqui O’Connor was fouled to make it 1-08 to 0-06 points. Kelly Hamilton responded for Rower Inistioge with a three points on the spin. She started the run with a point from twenty one meters in the fifty first minute. She followed this up with a point in fifty eight minute from a free from thirty five meters to cut the deficit to a goal 1-08 to 0-08. She followed this up with her sixth point of the contest in the sixty fourth minute to cut the deficit to two points, but time just ran out and Glenmore held on to record a 1-08 to 0-09 point victory to secure senior status and the Intermediate title for 2016. Glenmore won’t have long to celebrate as they are in Leinster Club action this Saturday against Myshall of Carlow, who will provide a stern test.

Young Irelands are junior county champions for the first time in 21 years and at the second time of asking when they overcame Conahy Shamrocks to claim a hat trick of titles for 2016 added the county title to the All County League and League titles already won.

It was Conahy who opened the games scoring through a Danielle Morrissey free form twenty one meters in the sixth minute after she was fouled. The victors responded with a brace of points. Aisling Carey started the run with a well taken point from thirty meters in the eight minute. Sarah Ann Quinlan continued the run with a goal from a penalty in the thirteenth minute after Paula Farrell was fouled.  Georgina Kelly responded for Conahy Shamrocks with a point from thirty five meters in the seventeenth minute to cut the deficit to two points 1-01 and 0-02. Laura Fennelly responded for Young Irelands with a point from twenty one meters in the seventeenth minute before Danielle Morrissey replied for Conahy Shamrocks with a free from twenty one meters in the eighteenth minute after she was fouled to make it 1-02 to 0-03.  Young Irelands closed out the half with three points on the spin. Sarah Ann Quinlan started the run with a point from forty five meters in the twentieth minute. She followed this up with a free from twenty one meters in the twenty first minute. Young Irelands continued their good run of form at the start of the second half when Ruth Loughlin pointed from twenty one meters in the thirty fifth minute. They were nearly in for a goal in the thirty ninth minute when Paula Farrell double on a long dropping ball only to see her effort go narrowly wide. Laura Fennelly put Young Irelands seven points clear when she pointed from twenty one meters in the forty sixth minute. Danielle Morrissey responded for Conahy Shamrocks with a brace of points. She started the run with a forty five in the forty seventh minute. She followed this up with a free from forty five meters in the forty eight minute to make it 1-07 to 0-05. Sarah Ann Quinlan responded for Young Irelands with point from twenty one meters in the fiftieth minute after going on a brilliant defence splitting run. Danielle Morrissey responded for Conahy Shamrocks with an excellent free from twenty one meters in the fifty first minute. Young Irelands replied with a brace of points. Sarah Ann Quinlan started the run with point from thirty meters in the fifty second minute. Paula Farrell then got in for her sides second goal after latching onto a breaking ball on the edge of the small square to tap home to make it 2-09 to 0-06. Conahy Shamrocks responded with three points on the spin.  Georgina Kelly started the run with a brace of points. She started by tapping over a point from twenty one meters in the fifty third minute. She followed this up with a point thirty second later from thirty meters. Danielle Morrissey then tapped over a free from forty five meters in the fifty fourth minute to cut the arrears to six points 2-09 to 0-09. Sensing the danger Young Irelands responded with a brace of scores. Paula Farrell started the run with a free from twenty one meters in the fifty fifth minute. Sarah Ann Quinlan followed this up with a point from thirty meters in the fifty sixth minute. Conahy Shamrocks replied with a brace of points through Danielle Morrissey in the fifty seventh minute from twenty one meters and Georgina Kelly from forty meters a minute later to cut the deficit to two points again 2-11 to 0-11 points. Paula Farrell closed out the games scoring with a long range point from fifty meters to see Young Irelands secure the title on a 2-12 to 0-11 points score line and secure Intermediate camogie for 2017.

In other camogie news Danesfort are under 16B champions after defeating James Stephens/John Lockes 1-10 to 1-06 in Bennetsbridge on Saturday afternoon. Danesfort enjoyed a 1-04 to 1-02 lead at half time but opened up in the second half to outscore their opponents six points to four to claim a six point win.
