Weekend Reports- Thomastown claim Under 16A title while Rower Inistioge and Glenmore secure Intermediate showdown

Thomastown 3-16      Young Irelands 3-04

Eimear Farrell finished with 1-10 as Thomastown proved too strong for a brave Young Irelands side in Dunmore on Saturday to claim the Under 16A County Title for 2016.

It was the victors who started the game the brighter and raced into a 1-01 to no score lead. It was Samantha Kavanagh who opened the scoring when she got in for the games opening goal in the third minute when she pounced on breaking ball in the square from a Eimear Farrell forty five that dropped short to tap home from the edge of the small square. Eimear Farrell followed this up with a point from twenty one meters after latching onto a Therese Donnelly pass to make it 1-01 to no score. She was nearly in for a goal thirty seconds later only her effort was brilliant saved by Hannah Brennan in the Young Irelands goal. Young Irelands bounced back brilliantly when Ciara O’Keeffe got in for a goal. She gained possession thirty meters from goal cut through the Thomastown cover to hit home from twenty one meters.  Thomastown responded with 1-03 on the spin. Eimear Farrell started the run with a forty five in the ninth minute. Thomastown then had a goal disallowed in the fourteenth minute after the referee called for a free out for a square ball in the fourteenth minute. A second goal was to come for the Town as a minute later Eimear Farrell latched onto a Therese Donnelly pass, to hand pass home from the edge of the small square.  Thomastown were getting more and more into the contest with their back getting right on top. Lisa Donnelly continued the good run with a well taking point from thirty five meters in the twenty fourth minute after latching onto a breaking ball. Therese Donnelly then got in for a point a minute later from twenty meters but it could so easily of being a goal as the sliotar scrapped the crossbar. This made it 2-04 to a goal. Young Irelands bounced back brilliantly and got three points on the spin to cut the deficit to four points. Steffi Fitzgerald started the run with point from thirty meters in the twenty fifth minute. Madison Lawson then tapped over a well taken point from thirty meters in the twenty eight minute before Steffi Fitzgerald tapped over a free from twenty one meters in the twenty ninth minute. Eimear Farrell responded for Thomastown with the last score of the half when she tapped over a point from twenty one meters on the stroke of half time to make it 2-05 to 1-03 at the interval.

Thomastown began the new half well and continued where they left off in the first half when they got two points on the spin. Samantha Kavanagh started the run with a point from twenty one meters in the opening minute after latching onto an Eimear Farrell pass. Eimear Farrell then tapped over an excellent point on the run from twenty one meters in the thirty third minute. Great credit to Young Irelands they responded brilliantly by getting 1-01 on the spin. Steffi Fitzgerald started the run with a goal in the thirty seventh minute when her shot from thirty five meters deceived the Thomastown defence and went straight to the net. Madison Lawson followed this up with a point from twenty one meters in the thirty eight minute to cut the deficit to three points 2-07 to 2-04.  Thomastown sensed the danger and responded brilliantly by getting 1-06 on the trot. Ruth Ryan started the run with a point from twenty one meters in the forty first minute. Therese Donnelly followed this up with a point from twenty one meters in the forty fifth minute. Eimear Farrell continued the good run with a point from twenty one meters after a brilliant catch to make it 2-10 to 2-04. Therese Donnelly put the game to bed in the forty seventh minute when she got in for her sides third goal, when she tapped home from the edge of the small square after a scramble in the Young Irelands square. Eimear Farrell followed this up with a brace of points. The first from twenty one meters in the forty eight minute and then from a forty five in the fiftieth minute. Eva Hoynes then got in on the act with a well taken score from twenty one meters in the fifty fourth minute to make it 3-13 to 2-04. Great credit to Young Ireland’s, they never gave up in the contest and got in for their third goal of the contest when a Steffi Fitzgerald free from thirty meters went straight to the roof of the Thomastown net. It was to be Thomastown’s day as they closed out the contest with three points on the spin through a trio of Eimear Farrell points. The first from thirty meters in the fifty ninth minute after latching onto an Eva Hoynes pass. She followed this up with a two frees. The first from thirty meters in the sixtieth minute and a further free from forty five meters in the sixty second minute to see her side claim the title on a 3-16 to 3-04 score line.

Rower Inistioge 3-10             St Brigids 2-06

Rower Inistioge secured safe passage through to Intermediate final for the second year in succession when they overcame a brave St Brigids side in the Kells road on Sunday on a 3-10 to 2-06 score line.

It was the victors who opened the scoring in the first minute through an Aine Gannon forty five. Eadaoin Murphy responded for St Brigids with a free from forty meters in the second minute. Kelly Hamilton responded brilliantly for Rower Inistioge when she got the game’s opening goal in the third minute when her shot from thirty five meters deceived the St Brigids defence and went straight to the corner of the net to make it 1-01 to 0-01. Eadaoin Murphy responded for St Brigids with a free from twenty one meters in the fifth minute. Rower Inistioge were getting more and more into the contest and closed out the half with four points on the spin. Ciara Foskin started the run with a point from twenty one meters in the seventh minute. Aine Gannon followed this up with a free from thirty five meters in the eight minute to make it 1-03 to 0-02 points. Ciara Foskin continued the Rower Inistioge good run with a point from twenty one meters after latching onto a Jo-Anna Galavan pass. Aine Gannon then tapped over a free from twenty one meters in the nineteenth minute after she was fouled to make it 1-05 to 0-02 points. They were a baron patch in the contest before half time with both sides cancelling each other out. St Brigids almost got in for a goal just before the half time break when Eimear Keoghan latched onto a breaking ball on the edge of the small square but her effort just scraped past the post. The referee then blew the half time whistle to see Rower Inistioge go in at the break with a five point advantage 1-05 to 0-2.

St Brigids raced out of the traps at the start of the second half and got in for 1-01 on the spin.  Laureena Murphy started the run in the opening minute when latched onto a Eadaoin Murphy free that came back of the post to blast home from twenty meters to cut the deficit to three points 1-05 to 1-02. Eimear Keoghan cut the deficit further when she tapped over a point from twenty one meters in the thirty eight minute to make it a two point game 1-05 to 1-03. Sensing danger Rower Inistioge responded brilliantly and got in for their second goal in the fortieth minute when Sarah O’Mahony latched onto the sliotar after a scramble in the St Brigids square to tap home from close range to put her side five points clear again 2-05 to 1-03. Eadaoin Murphy responded for St Brigids with a forty five in the forty second minute before Briona Langton tapped over a point for Rower Inistioge from twenty one meters a minute later. Eadaoin Murphy then tapped over a further free for St Brigids in the forty sixth minute from thirty meters to make it a four point game 2-06 to 1-05.  Rower Inistioge hit St Brigids with a further hammer blow in the forty seventh minute when Tara Kennedy got in for their third goal after she latched onto a high dropping ball into the St Brigids square rounded her marker with brilliant ground control of the sliotar to tap home from close range to make it 3-06 to 1-05. St Brigids responded brilliantly to this concession when Sarah Dunphy who was just introduced as sub got in for her sides second goal when she latched onto a rebound from a Laureena Murphy free to hand pass home from the edge of the small square to cut the deficit to four points 3-06 to 2-05. Aine Gannon responded for Rower Inistioge with a well taken point from forty five meters in the fiftieth minute. Eadaoin Murphy cut the deficit to four points again in the fifty third minute when she tapped over a free from twenty one meters. Rower Inistioge finished the game strong and reeled off three points on the spin without reply. Aine Gannon started the run with a massive free from sixty meters in the fifty seventh minute. Ciara Foskin followed this up with a well taken point from twenty one meters in the sixty first minute before Sarah O’Mahony got the last score of the contest with a point from twenty one meters in the sixty second minute to see Rower Inistioge secure the Intermediate final berth on a 3-10 to 2-06 score line. Rower Inistioge would only have to wait a couple of hours to see who would join them in the final as Danesfort and Glenmore clash in the days other semi final.

Glenmore will meet Rower Inistioge in this year’s Intermediate final next weekend after overcoming Danesfort in Ballyhale on Sunday afternoon on a 3-10 to 0-09 score line.

It was Danesfort who began the game well and opened the scoring through a Rachel Hogan free from forty five meters in the second minute. Glenmore responded with 1-01 on the spin. Helen Hoynes started the run with a free from twenty one meters in the fourth minute. Claire Aylward then got in for the games opening goal in the seventh minute, when she tapped home from the edge of the small square after latching onto a Clara Hendrick pass to make it 1-01 to 0-01. Laura Dooley responded for Danesfort with a well taken point from twenty one meters thirty seconds later. Danesfort were then struck again for a second time when Claire Aylward got in for her and Glenmore’s second goal in the tenth minute when she latched onto a breaking ball twenty meters from goal, ground struck the sliotar brilliantly to the corner of the net to make it 2-01 to 0-02 points. Danesfort hit back with a brace of Rachel Hogan points in the sixteenth minute from forty five meters and a brilliant over shoulder point from fifty meters in the seventeenth minute to cut the deficit to three points 2-01 to 0-04. Glenmore hit back with 1-02 on the spin. Helen Hoynes started the run with a point from a forty five in the nineteenth minute. Glenmore were then hit with a crucial blow in the twentieth minute after their double goal scorer Claire Aylward had to go off injury with a serious shoulder injury. Glenmore bounced back from this blow as they got in for their third goal in the contest through Jacqui O’Connor when she latched onto a Clara Hendrick pass to hand pass home from the edge of the small square. She followed this up with a well taken point from thirty five meters in the twenty seventh minute. Helen Hoynes continued the good run with a free from thirty five meters in the twenty eight minute. Rachel Hogan stopped the rot for Danesfort with a free from forty five meters in the thirtieth minute to cut the deficit at the break to eight points 3-04 to 0-05 points.

Glenmore began the new half well and got the opening score through a Helen Hoynes free from twenty one meters after Suzimay Aylward was fouled in the thirty second minute. Glenmore were nearly in for a goal in the thirty fourth minute when Clara Hendrick found herself in on goal only Aoife Walsh pulled off a brilliant save and Danesfort cleared there lines. Danesfort responded with a brace of points. Rachel Hogan started the run with a free from thirty five meters in the fortieth minute. Laura Dooley then tapped over a point from twenty one meters to cut the deficit to seven points 3-05 to 0-07. Marguerite Hoynes responded for Glenmore with a point from twenty one meters to put Glenmore eight points ahead again 3-06 to 0-07. Danesfort thought they were in for a goal in the fifty third minute after a scramble in the Glenmore square and when Ruth Kent got a hurl to the sliotar many thought it may cross the line but Brigid Mullally emerged from the pack and cleared the lines for Glenmore to the cheer of the supporters in attendance. Danesfort cut the deficit to six points with a brace of scores. Rachel Hogan started the run with a well taken point from forty five meters in the fifty fourth minute. Sarah Kent followed this up with a point from thirty five meters in the fifty fourth minute to make it 3-06 to 0-09 in what turned out to be there last score in the contest.  Glenmore finished the game strongly and got four points on the spin. Helen Hoynes started the run with a point from twenty one meters in the fifty sixth minute. Suzimay Aylward followed this up with a brace of points. She started the run with a point from twenty one meters in the fifty seventh minute and a excellent over shoulder effort from thirty meters in the sixty third minute before Jacqui O’Connor rounded off a brilliant afternoon for Glenmore with a point from thirty meters in the sixty fourth minute to seal next week’s final showdown with Rower Inistioge on a 3-10 to 0-09 point score line.

In other camogie news Dicksboro secured a senior semi final berth against Thomastown after overcoming Piltown in a thriller after extra time on a 2-16 to 2-14 score line. The junior A county final parings are also known with Conahy Shamrocks and Young Irelands set to clash for the third final this season after they both overcame there semi final opponents. Conahy Shamrocks proved too strong for O’Loughlin Gales on a 0-14 points to 0-02 score line while Young Irelands proved far too strong for Mooncoin when they emerged victorious on a 2-16 to 0-03 point’s score line. Slieverue are also celebrating after the weekend after they claim the Junior B All County league title after proving too strong for Blacks and Whites on a 6-11 to 0-06 points score line on Sunday evening last.
