All Ireland Senior Camogie Championship Quarter Final

Kilkenny 1-19         Offaly 0-11

The Kilkenny senior camogie team secured an All-Ireland semi-final berth against Galway in a fortnights time after proving too strong for Offaly 1-19 to 0-11 points in Nenagh on Saturday.

Kilkenny started the game brilliantly and raced into a 1-04 to no score lead. Julieann Malone gave the victors the perfect start when she got in for a goal in the opening minute when she latched onto a Michelle Quilty pass to tap from fourteen meters. Miriam Walsh then tapped over a point from thirty-five meters after latching onto a Collette Dormer pass in the third minute. Anna Farrell then tapped over a point from twenty-one meters in the sixth minute. Miriam Walsh who’s finished as player of the match then tapped over her second point of the contest in the eight minute. Michelle Quilty then tapped over a point from twenty-one meters in the ninth minute to put Kilkenny 1-04 to no score clear. Michaela Morkan stopped the rot for Offaly with a free from thirty-five meters in the tenth minute.  Kilkenny responded with three points on the spin. Shelly Farrell started the run with a point from twenty-one meters in the eleventh minute. Denise Gaule continued the good run with a well taken point from fifty meters in the twelfth minute.  She followed this up with a further long range point from fifty meters in the sixteen minute to make it 1-07 to 0-01.  Arlene Watkins replied for Offaly with an excellent point form twenty-one meters from right out on the side-line in the sixteenth minute, before Siobhan Flannery hit over a massive point from the half way a minute later to make it 1-07 to 0-03.  Kilkenny responded with two Denise Gaule frees. The first from twenty-one meters after Michelle Quilty was fouled in the eighteenth minute. She followed this up with a free from fifty meters after Shelly Farrell was fouled. Michaela Morkan replied for Offaly with a forty-five in the twenty third minute. Michelle Quilty replied for Kilkenny a minute later from twenty-one meters to make it 1-10 to 0-04. Offaly responded with two points on the spin. Siobhan Flannery started the run with a free from sixty-five meters in the twenty sixth minute. Linda Sullivan then tapped over a point from thirty-five meters in the twenty-eight minute after latching onto an Orlaigh Kirwan pass to make it 1-10 to 0-06. Denise Gaule responded with free from thirty-five meters after Michelle Quilty was fouled in the twenty-eight minute. Kilkenny were nearly in for a second goal in the twenty ninth minute when Shelly Farrell gained possession thirty meters from goal cut through the Offaly rear-guard, but her shot from fourteen meters was brilliantly saved and Offaly cleared their lines. Shortly after the referee blew the half time whistle to see Kilkenny lead at the break 1-11 to 0-06.

Kilkenny continued where they left off at the start of the second half and got in for two points on the spin.  Michelle Quilty started the run with a point from fourteen meters in the thirty fourth minute. Katie Power followed this up with a point from twenty-one meters in the thirty-eight minute after latching onto a Julieann Malone pass to make it 1-13 to 0-07. Michaela Morkan replied for the Faithful with a free from twenty-one meters in the fortieth minute, before Denise Gaule replied for Kilkenny with point from thirty meters in the forty first minute. Offaly replied with two points on the trot through Michaela Morkan. She started the run with a point from thirty-five meters in the forty third minute. She followed this up with a free from twenty-one meters a minute later to make it 1-14 to 0-09. Kilkenny replied with two points on the spin. Julieann Malone started the run with a point from twenty-one meters in the forty-eight minute. Michelle Quilty followed this up with a point from twenty-one meters in the forty ninth minute to make it 1-16 to 0-09. Michaela Morkan replied for Offaly with a further free from twenty-one meters in the fifty second minute. Miriam Walsh responded with her third point of the contest in the fifty fourth minute from fifty meters. Tina Hannon replied for Offaly with a point from thirty-five meters in the fifty fifth minute.  Kilkenny closed out the contest with two points on the spin. Aisling Dunphy who just came on as a sub started the run with a well taken point from thirty-five meters in the fifty sixth minute. Meighan Farrell followed this up with a point from forty-five meters in the fifty seventh minute. Offaly were awarded a penalty in the in the sixty first minute but Michaela Morkan effort was brilliantly saved and Kilkenny cleared their line to see them home on a 1-19 to 0-11-point score line. This victory sets up an All-Ireland semi-final spot with Galway on August 13th in Nowlan Park. This will be the third time the teams played this season having played in the league final in May in which Kilkenny emerged victorious and a fortnight ago where Galway emerged winners in the All Ireland groups stages. A thriller is in store.

In other camogie news the Under 14 Inter – County blitz took place on Sunday and was a big success. Nineteen teams from north and south of the county took part with Kilkenny claiming three of the fourth titles on offer.

All Ireland U16A Camogie Championship Group 1

The Kilkenny under 16 camogie team made it four wins from four and cemented their place at the top of the group table and secured an All-Ireland semi-final clash with Cork next weekend after easing past Clare in Callan on Sunday 3-26 to 1-04 with an impressive 3-21 of that from play.

Kilkenny put in a phenomenal first half display of attacking and defensive play and got 3-14 without reply in the first half. Eimear Farrell started the run with a point from twenty-one meters in the second minute. Suzie Aylward then got in for Kilkenny’s first goal when she capitalised on an error in the Clare defence to tap home from the edge of the small square. Danielle Morrissey then tapped over a free from twenty-one meters in the fifth minute to make it 1-02 to no score. Kym Ryan then tapped over a point from fourteen meters in the sixth minute. Clare had chances in the contest to open their account only for a brilliant defensive effort kept pushing the Banner attack out.  Aoife Doyle then chipped in with the first of her four points when she taped over from forty meters in the seventh minute. Eimear Farrell then tapped over a point from twenty-one meters in the eight minute after latching onto a Danielle Morrissey pass to make it 1-05 to no score. Suzi Aylward then tapped over a point from twenty-one meters a minute later. Eimear Farrell then put over her third point of the contest when she pointed from twenty-one meters thirty seconds later.  Kym Ryan followed this up with a point from twenty-one meters in the tenth minute before Suzi Aylward got in for her and Kilkenny’s second goal to put the game beyond Clare’s reach, when she latched on to a breaking ball after a mix-up in the Clare defence to tap home from close range to make it 2-08 to no score a minute later. Aoife Doyle followed this score up with a well taken point from twenty-one meters in the twelfth minute.  Credit to Clare they tried to get a foothold in the contest but the Kilkenny defence held firm and brilliantly frustrated their efforts.  Danielle Morrissey then tapped over her second point of the contest from a free in the fifteen minute after Suzie Aylward was fouled from twenty-one meters. She followed this up with a well taken score from forty-five meters a minute later to make it 2-11 to no score.  Eimear Farrell followed this up with a point from twenty-one meters in the seventeenth minute. Aoife Doyle then tapped over a well taken point from thirty-five meters a minute later. Eimear Farrell then got in for Kilkenny’s third goal of the contest in the nineteenth minute when she latched onto a Danielle Morrissey pass to blast home from twenty-one meters. Danielle Morrissey closed out the first half scoring with a well taken point from thirty meters in the twenty fifth minute after latching onto an Aoife Doyle pass to see Kilkenny lead at the break 3-14 to no score at half time, to round off a fabulous half of scoring by the Cats.

Kilkenny began the second half brightly and were nearly in for their fourth goal of the contest only Clare net minder Shauna Canny pulled off a terrific save from a Katie Brennan effort in the thirty second minute. Lisa Donnelly opened the first half scoring for Kilkenny with a well taken point from thirty meters in the thirty third minute. Danielle Morrissey followed this up with a point from twenty-one meters a minute later. Clare opened their account through an Aoife Power free from thirty-five meters in the thirty fifth minute. Aoife Doyle replied for Kilkenny with a point from thirty-five meters in the thirty sixth minute to make it 3-17 to 0-01. Danielle Morrissey followed his up with a free from thirty meters in the thirty ninth minute before Hannah Kelly who was just introduced tapped over a well taken point from twenty-one meters in the forty first minute. Aoife Power replied with an excellent free for Clare in the forty second minute from thirty meters out on the side-line.  Steffi Fitzgerald who also was just introduced then tapped over a well taken point from twenty-one meters in the forty third minute. Great credit to Clare they kept plugging away and their effort were rewarded in the forty seventh minute when Muireann Scanlon capitalised on an error in the Kilkenny rear guard to tap home from the edge of the small square to make it 3-20 to 1-02. Aoife Power then tapped over her third free of the contest a minute later. Kilkenny hit back with two quick points. Danielle Morrissey started the run with a well taken point from thirty-five meters in the fiftieth minute before Katie Brennan tapped over a point from twenty-one meters in the fifty second minute to make it 3-22 to 1-03.  Aoife Power replied for Clare with a point from twenty-one meters thirty second later. Kilkenny closed out the contest with four points without reply. Danielle Morrissey started the run with a brace of frees.  She started the run with a free from twenty-one meters in the fifty fifth minute. She followed this up with a further free from twenty-one meters in the fifty seventh minute after Hannah Kelly was fouled on her passage on goal. Katie Brennan then tapped over a point from twenty-one meters in the sixtieth minute. Hannah Kelly closed out the scoring with a point from fourteen meters in the first minute of injury time and was unlucky that it was not a goal as her effort just scrapped the cross bar to see Kilkenny record an impressive victory on a 3-26 to 1-04 score line. This victory secures an All-Ireland semi-final berth against Cork on Sunday next. Time and venue to be confirmed.
