All Ireland Minor Championship- Kilkenny too strong for brave Wexford

The Kilkenny minor team made it two wins for two when they defeated Wexford 1-13 to 1-07 in Thomastown on Saturday.

Kilkenny started the game well and raced into a four point lead in the opening four minutes. Ciara Phelan opened the scoring in the first minute before Marguerite Hoynes tapped over a minute later. Jenny O’Neill then got two on the trot in the third and fourth minutes to see Kilkenny 0-04 points to no score ahead after four minutes. Roisin Kelly stopped the rot for the Slaneysiders when she tapped over from an awkward angle from twenty one meters after good link up play with Leah Walsh. Kilkenny thought they were in for a goal in the eight minute when Jenny Clifford rounded her marker to hand pass to the net, but the referee adjudged the sliotar was threw into the net.  Wexford took advantage of this when Roisin Kelly excellently pointed down the other end of the pitch from an awkward angle.  Chloe Blackmore responded for Kilkenny with a point from twenty one meters in the fourteen minute before Chloe Foxe pointed for Wexford to make it 0-05 points to 0-03 after fifteen minutes. Jenny Clifford who was causing havoc in the Wexford got two points on the trot in the sixteenth and twentieth minutes to push Kilkenny four clear. Wexford bounced back with two Chloe Foxe frees in the twenty fourth and twenty seven minutes to see them trail by two at the break 0-07 points to 0-05.

 

Kilkenny made the dream start to the second half when Sarah Walsh brilliantly batted a high ball into the Wexford square to the net in the thirty fourth minute. Kilkenny followed this up with two Chloe Blackmore points. The first in the thirty seventh minute from play and from a free in the forty third minute to see Kilkenny 1-09 to 0-05 ahead.  Wexford responded with two points on the trot from Roisin Kelly from thirty five meters before Chloe Foxe tapped over a forty five to see them trail by five. Kilkenny then got two on the trot from a Laura Murphy point from play in the forty ninth minute and a further Chloe Blackmore free in the fifty fourth minute. Wexford got in for a goal in the fifty seventh minute when Una Sinnot brilliantly blasted the ball to the Kilkenny net from twenty one meters. Kilkenny closed out the contest with two Chloe Blackmore frees in the sixty first and fourth minutes to see Kilkenny home on a 1-13 to 1-07 score line.
